Lalibela Game Reserve

"The only man I envy is the man who has not yet been to Africa, for he has so much to look forward to"

We believe that this anonymous 19th century quotation expresses how special the continent of Africa is. The central ethos of Lalibela is to ensure that what visitors experience with us does justice to these sentiments.

Lalibela Game Reserve is located in the Eastern Cape, which means it is not only malaria free, but spans 5 ecosystems, resulting in a breath-taking diversity of flora and fauna. The three main aspects of any safari are the game-viewing, the accommodation and the food. At Lalibela we take special care to ensure that heartfelt service combines with these three "ingredients" to make your African safari experience a memorable one.

Lalibela Game Reserve consists of 7,500 hectares (approximately 18,500 acres) and is home to the Big 5 (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo & leopard). Lalibela is unique in the Eastern Cape in that we have no public roads running through our property. All of the animals, including the predators, are free-roaming throughout the entire reserve.

We currently have three game lodges - Lentaba Lodge, Mark's Camp and Tree Tops - all offering decor that is infused with the essence of Africa, as well as warm and friendly service and unforgettable game viewing. Lalibela brings you the charm of authentic Africa and is a perfect blend of the formal and informal. At Lalibela, food is true safari cuisine with an emphasis on local specialties, ranging from centuries-old recipes to exciting contemporary African dishes.

Rangers had a lovely surprise on the game drive this morning when they spotted a new addition to one of the elephant herds.  A calf (not more than 2 days old and still very pink in colour) was walking very unsteadily alongside its mother.  Photos to follow.

Interesting fact about South Africa

South Africa has the only street in the world to house two Nobel Peace Prize winners - Vilakazi Street in Soweto has houses owned by Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Dear friends

We might not be able to visit again this year, but let me assure you that we had an absolutely fantastic stay at Lalibela. Your staff at the reserve, are really  the most accommodating group of people that we have met in a very, very long time. Your game rangers are superb, in spite of the couple of "nail-biting" experiences we had with elephants that do not seem to realise that when the Jeep comes along they must "graciously' move out of the road!!! Your lady chef at Lentaba (shame on me I just cannot get to her name), should get an Olympic Gold for spoiling us rotten.

Kind regards

I just wanted to let you know our trip was truly memorable. The food was great. The staff was very caring and nothing was too much trouble. Our ranger (Chris) was extremely knowledgeable about plant and wildlife (a bit of info on the stars was also imparted!) We had a great time and would heartily recommend Lalibela to everyone.

Thanking you for a wonderful time
